Michael was born in Belfast, Ireland, and now lives in Barrie, Canada. He began painting seriously in 2000, influenced by the teachings of John Anderson and the works of Richard Schmid, Kevin MacPherson and Tom Thompson. He draws inspiration for his plein air paintings from their Kawagama Lake cottage in Haliburton, and their second home in Long Cove, Newfoundland, in addition to travels in Ireland, Scotland and France
